Kees Joosten

Kees Joosten is managing director of the Dutch office in Utrecht. Besides coaching the team of consultants and trainees, he is involved in the execution of assignments. His expertise lies in mission driven innovation; creating economic and societal impact. He is experienced in exploring trends, defining opportunities, developing research agendas, initiating large scale programmes and collaborative projects. In the past 30 years Kees developed extensive knowledge in recycling & circular economy, climate adaptation & environmental management, and biobased economy. He has worked for the maritime & port sector, local, regional and national governments and industry.

At Bax & Company NL, Kees has worked for several provinces to translate economic policy into implementation plans on topics including datafication, biobased economy, circular applications of problematic waste streams, and green chemistry. Analyses have been made to identify opportunities in the battery sector, wet agriculture and immersive content. He is programme manager for the Dutch national research program on mission driven innovation, researching how to accelerate scaling innovation to contribute to societal challenges.

After graduating from the Technical University Delft (Industrial design engineering) in 1991, Kees joined Willems & van den Wildenberg, the predecessor of Bax & Company. A wide variety of consultancy projects were successfully delivered – ranging from improving the R&D-process at SMEs, supporting the development and implementation of national and regional innovation policies, developing the first Dutch circular service company for recycling electronics, to the set up and management of European collaborative projects.

He continued his career in 2005 as manager of research and innovation at Port of Rotterdam authority. He developed and implemented an innovation agenda, which resulted in close cooperation with universities, research institutions, companies, start-ups, local governments and other port authorities.

In 2012 Kees switched to one of the universities he worked with. At the Rotterdam University of applied sciences he developed a new research centre: Sustainable Mainport Innovation. This centre for applied research grew in two years to 18 professors and 60 researchers. As strategy consultant to the board, he contributed to the Corporate Strategy 2025.

At the end of 2016 Kees reunited with his study mate, former business partner and friend Laszlo Bax to set up the Dutch branch office.
